How to get your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF is located in Los Angeles at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It consists of 2,711 stars embedded into the sidewalk along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents a person who has contributed to television, radio, theatre, music, motion pictures, or any other aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.
You must first submit your name and address to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to become a member of HWOF. The Hollywood Department of Cultural Affairs then submits your information to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, a certificate will be sent to you stating that you are eligible. This includes your name as well as date of birth and the city where you live. You also receive a bronze plaque with your name engraved on it. This plaque is attached directly to the concrete base, in front of designated stars.
You may apply to be a star if you are nominated by a HWOF member or if you make significant contributions to television, radio, TV, theatre, music or other forms of "popular culture". A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do so, they send a message to the applicant's address explaining their decision. The person who accepts the nomination will receive a second confirmation letter. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce then sends $25 to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the artist or organization whose application was accepted. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). After the artist has been awarded his/her star, they are eligible to join the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due is dependent on the number of years since you were first recognized. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. For example, if your first nomination was in 1990, you would owe $15,000. However, if it had been in 1980, you would owe 10,000.
You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will remove the name of your from the list.
How old do you have to be in order to receive a star on HWOF?
Nominations are open to anyone over 18 years of age. To receive a Star, one must still be living at the time. After receiving a stars, one could still be nominated after ten more years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
A family member can nominate your name for a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place an honorary marker in front of the star if there are no living relatives.
