FAQ

What percentage of box office profits goes to marketing?

Marketing budgets often account for 20%-40% of the film's budget. This is because marketing is critical to the success and longevity of any film.

No one will know about your film if you don't do good marketing. If people don't know anything about your film they won't pay to see it.

Why aren't more filmmakers using crowdfunding sites like Indiegogo and Kickstarter?

Crowdfunding is a great way to connect with potential investors.

Most filmmakers don’t believe they have the right to ask for money. They feel they must have someone to speak for them.

And since they haven't proven themselves yet, they don't think anyone should invest in them.

Instead, they spend many months working on the project in hopes that someone will notice.

Then, once they finally launch their campaign, they realize they didn't prepare properly.

Instead of thousands of dollar, they get a handful of donations.

What's the difference between an indie film and a foreign language film?

A film made independently is typically done by one filmmaker, who makes all the decisions.

The opposite is true for foreign language films. They are usually produced by a larger production company.

They frequently hire actors, directors, and writers from other countries.

So that the dialogue sounds natural, they also employ professional translators.

How To

How to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF can be found at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who made motion pictures, television or radio, as well as music and other aspects of popular culture. There are 1,922 individuals currently listed on HWOF.

You will need to submit your application to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be considered for membership to the HWOF. Once submitted, your name will be sent to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, a certificate will be sent to you stating that you are eligible. This includes your name as well as date of birth and the city where you live. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.

You may apply to be a star if you are nominated by a HWOF member or if you make significant contributions to television, radio, TV, theatre, music or other forms of "popular culture". A committee evaluates all nominations and then decides whether to approve them. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce then sends $25 to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a check payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which sends the check to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays artists or organizations whose applications were accepted. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs gets the rest.

After the artist has been awarded his/her star, they are eligible to join the HWOF. To be included in the HWOF, your balance must be paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due will depend on when you were first nominated. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.

To remove yourself from HWOF, contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. They will help you pay the remaining debt. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.

How old does one have to get a star on the HWOF?

You must be at the least 18 year old to be nominated. To be eligible for a star, you must still be alive. A star can be renominated after 10 years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

You can be nominated by your family members to receive a star. If no relatives are living, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce may place a memorial stone in front of your star.

Why can't we just choose a different street and not have stars all over?

The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It honors those who made history through film.

What happened with the stars that were stolen? Around 1,200 stars were taken by the thieves. Each star is between 250-300 lbs. If you add all of the weight together, it comes to approximately 4 tons of stars!
