FAQ

What is the difference between a producer and a distributor?

Produced by a producer, the movie is produced. The distributor distributes the movie. A distributor can distribute the movie to theaters or other companies such as Netflix. Distributors buy movies directly from producers. They then make them available for sale to theaters as well cable channels and streaming services.

Distributors must negotiate with theater owners where their movies will be shown. This means that some theaters might charge more money for a certain movie than others. You should select a distributor that has multiple theaters if you want your movie seen as much as possible.

What happens to my film if it doesn't do well in the box office?

If your film does not do well at the box office, there are many things that could happen.

First, it is possible to decide to modify how you market the film.

Second, you may decide to rewrite the script.

Third, you might consider adding characters.

Fourth, you might decide to remove some characters.

Fifth, you might choose to cut scenes.

Sixth, it's possible to decide that the film was too expensive.

Why is it that so few independent films are ever released?

Many indie filmmakers believe that distributors will take their films.

They believe distributors will pick up their films because they know the public will love their work.

However, this is rarely the case. Distributors often profit from independent filmmakers.

They may delay a film's release until after the awards season is over.

Or they delay the release date of a low-budget film until after the summer blockbuster season has begun.

Distributors try to keep films out of the hands of audiences until they've spent hundreds on tickets, popcorn, and candy.

They don’t want to miss out on these profits.
