FAQ

What's the difference of an indie movie and a foreign-language film?

A film made independently is typically done by one filmmaker, who makes all the decisions.

The opposite is true for foreign language films. They are usually produced by a larger production company.

They often hire actors, writers, and directors from other countries.

You can also find professional translators to make the dialogue sound natural.

Is Hollywood more important than Bollywood?

Producers face the greatest challenge of making sure their movie is seen by viewers.

Problem is, there are many films competing for viewers' time and money. It's hard to stand out among the rest and get noticed.

But what makes a movie popular? What makes an actor or director famous? Or a director? Talent is not enough. It also requires luck. Even if you have the most talented actors in the world they won't be able to make it work if they write bad scripts.

Films can be divided into two categories: blockbuster films with large budgets or independent productions. Producing and distributing blockbuster movies can cost hundreds of millions. They're usually made by huge studios who want to ensure their movies reach as wide an audience as possible. But big-budget films appeal more to older audiences.

Independent films, which are typically smaller-scale productions, can be financed either by individual investors or groups. These films often focus on niche markets and cater to specific tastes. They are generally less costly to produce and market. But, they aren't necessarily cheaper to view. It is actually very difficult to find most indie movies.

Is it possible to have both types of films? Do we need big blockbuster movies and small independent ones? Hollywood is bigger than Bollywood, according to me. That's because Hollywood produces almost twice as many movies per year as India does!

Why do so few independent films ever get distributed?

Indie filmmakers often assume that distributors will pick up their films.

Because they are confident that the public will love their film, they believe distributors would be willing to buy it.

However, this is rarely the case. Distributors often take advantage of independent filmmakers.

They might delay a film’s release date until after the awards show has finished.

They delay the release of a low-budget movie until after the summer blockbuster seasons has started.

Distributors may also keep films from the public until people have already spent hundreds of money on tickets, popcorn or candy.

After all, they don't want to lose out on those profits.

What percentage of the box office goes to marketing budgets?

Marketing budgets usually account for anywhere from 20%-40% of a film's budget. This is because marketing is critical to the success and longevity of any film.

No one will know about your film if you don't do good marketing. It is impossible to get people to pay for your film without knowing all about it.

Why don't more filmmakers use crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo?

Crowdfunding sites are great because they allow you to reach out directly to potential investors.

But most filmmakers don't think they're qualified to ask for money. They feel that they need someone else to vouch for them.

Since they haven’t proved themselves yet, they don’t think anyone should make an investment in them.

Instead, they spend long hours working on their project, in hopes of someone noticing.

Then, once they finally launch their campaign, they realize they didn't prepare properly.

Instead of receiving thousands upon thousands of dollars, the recipients end up with a handful donations.

Are foreign sales worth more to Hollywood than domestic?

Yes, but only slightly. Foreign revenues made up about 17% of total revenue in 2017. Domestic revenues accounted for 83%.

More than half of the world’s population lives in foreign markets.

This means that people who may never have the chance to see a movie at home might still be curious about your movie.

What happens if my film fails to perform at the box offices?

Several things could happen if your film performs poorly at the box office.

You might want to change the marketing of your film.

You may also choose to rework your script.

Third, you might consider adding characters.

Fourth, you might decide that some characters should be removed

Fifth, it is possible to decide to end the scene.

Sixth, it's possible to decide that the film was too expensive.

How To

How to get an honor star on Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF) was established in 1960 by the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The HWOF can be found at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard, Los Angeles, California. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents a person who has contributed to television, radio, theatre, music, motion pictures, or any other aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently has 1,922 listed living people.

To become a member of HWOF you will need to submit your name at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. This submits your name then to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque is affixed to a concrete base in front of the designated star.

A current HWOF member can nominate you for a star or if you have made significant contributions in movies, television or radio. A committee evaluates all nominations and then decides whether to approve them. If they do, they send a letter to the applicant's home address explaining their decision. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce will then pay $25. This money is forwarded to the Department of Cultural Affairs of Los Angeles.

The department issues a check payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which sends the check to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.

After the artist has been awarded his/her star, they are eligible to join the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due depends on how many years ago you were first nominated. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.

If you want to remove yourself from the HWOF, you need to contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce and pay off the remainder of your debt. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.

How old is one to be eligible for a HWOF Star?

Nominations are open to anyone over 18 years of age. To receive a Star, one must still be living at the time. After receiving a stars, one could still be nominated after ten more years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Nominating you can be done by family members. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce can place a memorial marker next to the star, if there aren't any living relatives.

Why can't we just choose a different street and not have stars all over?

The HWOF was not created to be a historical landmark. It is intended to honor all those who have made film history possible.

What happened to all the stars stolen? Around 1,200 stars were taken by the thieves. Each star is approximately 250-300 lbs in weight. That's about 4 tons of stars!
