FAQ
Can I form my own distribution business?
No. Without being a distributor, you cannot legally establish a distribution company.
Even though you may not be distributing other people's films, you still have to follow certain rules.
You cannot, for instance, charge different prices at different theaters. You cannot also charge different fees to customers.
Other companies cannot also sell your services.
What percentage of the box office goes to marketing budgets?
Marketing budgets often account for 20%-40% of the film's budget. This is because marketing is very important to the success of any film.
No one will know about your film if you don't do good marketing. People won't pay for it if they don’t know about it.
Why is Hollywood calling this Hollywood?
The first film industry was founded in California in 1887 by D.W. Griffith. It was named for its Los Angeles location, also known as Hollywood at that time.
Because it was such a fascinating place, people kept coming back for more. People would travel all the way from other countries to see what was happening.
Hollywood is still a big part of our culture. We have movies and television shows, music videos, commercials and so on. All of them are called "Hollywood."
Why is it that so few independent films are ever released?
Many indie filmmakers believe that distributors will take their films.
Because they are confident that the public will love their film, they believe distributors would be willing to buy it.
This is not often the case. Independent filmmakers are often used by distributors.
They might delay a film’s release date until after the awards show has finished.
Or they delay the release date of a low-budget film until after the summer blockbuster season has begun.
Distributors are also trying to keep films off the streets until audiences have already spent hundreds upon thousands of dollars on tickets or popcorn.
They don't wish to lose those profits.

How To
How to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame
In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF is located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. It has 2,711 stars embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents someone who contributed to motion pictures, television, radio, theater, music, or some aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently has 1,922 listed living people.
To become a member of the HWOF, you must submit your name to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then submits your name to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. After being approved, you will be issued a certificate stating your name, date and place of birth. It also includes information about your occupation, occupation and category. You will also receive a bronze plaque engraved with your name. This plaque is attached directly to the concrete base, in front of designated stars.
You can apply for a star if a current member of the HWOF nominated you or if you made significant contributions to movies, television, radio, theatre, music, or something else considered part of "popular culture." A committee evaluates the nominations and decides whether to approve them. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce will then pay $25. This money is forwarded to the Department of Cultural Affairs of Los Angeles.
The department issues a cheque payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce. It then sends the check the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the application submitted by the artist or organization. The artist or organization then pays the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce half the fee ($12.50). The other half goes to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs.
Once an artist has received their star, he/she is eligible to be listed in the HWOF. To be eligible for the HWOF, the artist must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce any balance. The amount due will depend on when you were first nominated. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.
You will need to contact Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be removed from the HWOF. They will take care of removing your name from the list permanently.
How old do you have to be in order to receive a star on HWOF?
To be nominated, one must be at least 18 years. To receive a star, one must be alive at that time. After receiving a star, one may still be nominated again after ten years.
What happens if I die before my star gets put up?
Nominating you can be done by family members. If there are no known living relatives, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place the memorial marker in front of it.
Why not just have stars on every street?
The HWOF isn't meant to be an historical monument. It is meant as a memorial to all who contributed to the history of film.
What happened the star thefts? The thieves stole around 1,200 stars. Each star is between 250-300 lbs. If you add all of the weight together, it comes to approximately 4 tons of stars!
