FAQ

How much does it cost for a feature movie to be distributed?

A typical distribution deal costs between $100,000-$150,000.

Theaters typically cost around $10,000.

Screens are typically around $5,000 in cost.

That means that if you have 100 screens, then your distribution fee would be around $500,000.

Why is Hollywood calling this Hollywood?

D.W. Griffith established the first film industry in California, 1887. It was named after Los Angeles, at the time known as Hollywood.

Because it was such a fascinating place, people kept coming back for more. It was a place that people would travel from all walks of the globe to experience.

Hollywood is an important part of culture today. We have movies, television shows, music videos, commercials, etc. These are all known as Hollywood.

Why aren't more independent films distributed?

Indie filmmakers tend to assume that distributors will buy their films.

Because the film is loved by the public, they believe distributors will be interested in it.

This is not often the case. Independent filmmakers are often used by distributors.

They may delay a film's release until after the awards season is over.

They might delay the release of low-budget films until after the summer blockbuster series has begun.

Distributors are also trying to keep films off the streets until audiences have already spent hundreds upon thousands of dollars on tickets or popcorn.

They don't wish to lose those profits.

How To

How to get your star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce established the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. The HWOF is located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles, California. It's made up of 2,711 stars, which are embedded in the sidewalk on Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents an individual who contributed to popular culture, such as television, radio or theater. There are currently 1,922 active individuals on the HWOF.

You will need to submit your application to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be considered for membership to the HWOF. Once submitted, your name will be sent to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you have been approved, you will be given a certificate that shows your name and details, including date of birth, place of residence, occupation, and category. You will also receive a bronze plaque engraved with your name. This plaque is attached directly to the concrete base, in front of designated stars.

If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. A committee evaluates all nominations and then decides whether to approve them. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. If the person accepts the nomination, he/she receives a second letter confirming acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues an official check payable to Hollywood Chamber of commerce. This check is then sent to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays any artist or organization that submitted an application. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then pays half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs takes the other half.

Once the artist has received his/her star, he/she becomes eligible to be included in the HWOF. You must pay the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce the balance due to be included on the HWOF. The amount due depends on how many years ago you were first nominated. If you were first honoured in 1990, then you would owe $15,000. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.

You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will remove your name from this list.

How old do you have to be in order to receive a star on HWOF?

To be nominated, one must be at least 18 years. A person must be present at the time of receiving a star. After receiving a stars, one could still be nominated after ten more years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Family members may nominate you to be a star. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place an honorary marker in front of the star if there are no living relatives.

Why can't we just choose a different street and not have stars all over?

The HWOF is not meant to be a historical monument. It honors those who made history through film.

What happened to the stars that got stolen? The thieves took around 1,200 stars. Each star is approximately 250-300 lbs in weight. That's about 4 tons of stars!
