How to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce founded the Hollywood Walk of Fame, HWOF (Hollywood Walk of Fame) in 1960. The HWOF, located at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard Los Angeles, California. It is composed of 2,711 stars embedded into sidewalks along Hollywood Boulevard. Each star represents someone who made motion pictures, television or radio, as well as music and other aspects of popular culture. There are 1,922 individuals currently listed on HWOF.

You will need to submit your application to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce in order to be considered for membership to the HWOF. Once submitted, your name will be sent to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once approved, a certificate will be sent to you stating that you are eligible. This includes your name as well as date of birth and the city where you live. A bronze plaque with your personalization is also provided. This plaque is attached on a concrete base at the star.

If a member of the HWOF has nominated you, or if your contributions are significant to films, television, radio or theatre, or any other part of popular culture, you can apply for a Star. A committee evaluates all nominations and then decides whether to approve them. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. If the person accepts the nomination, he/she receives a second letter confirming acceptance. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce then charges $25 and forwards the money on to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.

The department issues a check payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which sends the check to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the application submitted by the artist or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce receives half of the fee ($12.50). The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.

Once an artist has received their star, he/she is eligible to be listed in the HWOF. To be listed on the HWOF, you must pay the remaining balance owed to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. If you were first nominated for a nomination in 1990, your owe $15,000. However, if you had been previously nominated in 1980, you would owe $10,000.

Contact the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to get your name removed from the HWOF and to repay any outstanding debts. They will remove your name permanently from the HWOF list.

How old is one to be eligible for a HWOF Star?

One needs to be at least 18 years old when being nominated. To receive a coveted star, one must be at least 18 years old. After receiving a Star, one can still be Nominated for another star after ten Years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

Nominating you can be done by family members. If there are no living relatives, then the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce will place a memorial marker in front of the star.

Why not just have stars on every street?

The HWOF doesn't intend to be historical monument. It honors those who made history through film.

What happened the star thefts? The thieves took approximately 1,200 stars. Each star weighs approximately 250-300 pounds, which equates to 4 tons of stars.
