FAQ

What is the difference between a producer and a distributor?

A producer creates the movie. A distributor distributes the movie. Distributors and theaters are two options for producers to sell their movies. Distributors acquire movies from producers. They then sell them to theaters and cable channels or streaming services.

Distributors should negotiate with theater owners regarding where their movies are playing. This means that some theaters might charge more money for a certain movie than others. If you want your movie to be seen by as many people as possible, you should choose a distributor with many theaters.

How much does it cost for a feature movie to be distributed?

A typical distribution deal costs between $100,000-$150,000.

The average cost of a theater is approximately $10,000

The average screen price is approximately $5,000

It means that, if you have 100 screens your distribution fees would be $500,000.

Your distribution fees would be $50,000 if you had ten screens.

How many movies makes Hollywood each year?

Hollywood studios produce around 3,000 films per year. That's right, 3000!

These films are marketed by Hollywood, which spends billions of dollars. They spend millions creating them. They spend millions to promote them. But how many do you think actually end up getting released into theaters?

It's probably between 200-300. What happens then to the 2,700+ remaining films? Most of them are either released direct-to-video or just sit in storage.

They are not all destined to be overlooked. Some of them were selected for distribution via Netflix Prime, Amazon Prime and Hulu Plus, iTunes or Google Play.

Hence why don't more of these films be released? Why are they not released in theaters? Because they're too expensive to produce.

They could also be made cheaper and put into theaters.

Here's where you find me. I will help you find the best possible way to release your film in theaters.

You'll learn how to maximize your return and increase the chances of your movie being shown in theaters.

We have to face it...

It can be hard to get your film into the theaters. This process can be complicated, lengthy, and filled with legalities.

It can also come at a high cost before you even begin.

You have a very short window in which to distribute your film.

There isn't enough time in between the time a movie is finished and when its theatrical run starts.

Why is it called Hollywood?

D.W. Griffith was the one who founded California's first film industry. It was named in honor of its Los Angeles location, known at the time as "Hollywood".

Because it was an exciting area to visit, the name stuck. People came from all parts of the country to see what was going on there.

Hollywood is an important part of culture today. We have movies, television shows, music videos, commercials, etc. All of them are called "Hollywood."

Why isn't there more crowdfunding sites such as Indiegogo and Kickstarter for filmmakers?

Crowdfunding sites are great because they allow you to reach out directly to potential investors.

But most filmmakers don't think they're qualified to ask for money. They feel that they need someone else to vouch for them.

Since they haven’t proved themselves yet, they don’t think anyone should make an investment in them.

Instead, they spend long hours working on their project, in hopes of someone noticing.

Then, once they finally launch their campaign, they realize they didn't prepare properly.

So instead of getting thousands of dollars, they end up with just a handful of donations.

Why do so few independent films ever get distributed?

Indie filmmakers are assuming that distributors will be interested in their films.

Because they are confident that the public will love their film, they believe distributors would be willing to buy it.

This is not often the case. Distributors often take advantage of independent filmmakers.

They employ tactics like delaying a movie's release until after awards season has ended.

They might delay the release of low-budget films until after the summer blockbuster series has begun.

Distributors also try to keep films away from audiences until they've already spent hundreds of dollars on tickets, popcorn, or candy.

They don't want any of those profits to go to waste.

How To

How to get a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame

In 1960, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce created the Hollywood Walk of Fame (HWOF). The HWOF is located in Los Angeles at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It has 2,711 stars embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents a person who has contributed to television, radio, theatre, music, motion pictures, or any other aspect of popular culture. The HWOF currently lists 1,922 people.

You must first submit your name and address to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to become a member of HWOF. The Hollywood Department of Cultural Affairs then submits your information to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you have been approved, you will be given a certificate that shows your name and details, including date of birth, place of residence, occupation, and category. A bronze plaque with the name of your choice is included. This plaque is attached to a concrete base located in front of the designated Star.

You can apply for a star if a current member of the HWOF nominated you or if you made significant contributions to movies, television, radio, theatre, music, or something else considered part of "popular culture." A committee reviews the nominations and determines whether they should be approved. If they do, they will send a letter explaining their decision to the applicant at his/her home address. The second letter is sent to the applicant confirming acceptance of the nomination if the person accepts it. The Hollywood Chamber of commerce charges $25, and then the money is sent to the Department of Cultural Affairs of the City of Los Angles.

The department issues a check payable the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, which then sends the check directly to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation. The foundation pays the application submitted by the artist or organization. The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce pays half of the $12.50 fee to the artist or organization. The City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs pays the remainder.

After an artist has received his/her Star, he/she can be eligible for the HWOF. To be included in the HWOF, your balance must be paid to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce. The amount due depends upon how many years ago your first nomination was. For example, $15,000. Suppose you were first nominated as a nominee in 1990. If you were nominated for the first time in 1990, you would owe $15,000.

You can remove yourself from HWOF by contacting the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to pay the rest of your debt. They will remove the name of your from the list.

How old is one to be eligible for a HWOF Star?

When nominated, one must have at least 18-years-old. To be eligible for a star, you must still be alive. One can still be nominated after receiving a star after ten years.

What happens if I die before my star gets put up?

You can be nominated by your family members to receive a star. If no relatives are living, the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce may place a memorial stone in front of your star.

Why can't we just choose a different street and not have stars all over?

The HWOF doesn't intend to be historical monument. It is meant as a memorial to all who contributed to the history of film.

What happened to the stars that got stolen? Around 1,200 stars were taken by the thieves. Each star weighs approximately 250-300 pounds, which equates to 4 tons of stars.
