FAQ
Why don't more filmmakers use crowdfunding sites like Kickstarter and Indiegogo?
Crowdfunding sites can be great as they let you reach out to potential investors.
Most filmmakers don’t believe they have the right to ask for money. They feel they need someone to stand by them.
Since they haven’t proved themselves yet, they don’t think anyone should make an investment in them.
Instead, they spend months working hard on their project in the hope that someone will notice.
Then, once they finally launch their campaign, they realize they didn't prepare properly.
They end up with only a few donations, instead of thousands of dollars.
What percentage of box office profits goes to marketing?
Marketing budgets often account for 20%-40% of the film's budget. This is because marketing is critical to the success and longevity of any film.
Without effective marketing, no one will be able to find out about your film. People won't pay for it if they don’t know about it.
It is called Hollywood.
D.W. Griffith established the first film industry in California, 1887. It was named after Los Angeles, at the time known as Hollywood.
Because it was an exciting area to visit, the name stuck. It attracted people from all over the world to check out what was happening.
Today, Hollywood is still very much part of our culture. There are movies, TV shows, music videos and commercials. All of them are called "Hollywood."
Are foreign sales more lucrative than domestic ones for Hollywood?
Yes, but not very much. In 2017, foreign revenues accounted for about 17% of total revenue. 83% of total revenue came from domestic sources.
Over half of the world's population is actually located in overseas markets.
This means that people who may never have the chance to see a movie at home might still be curious about your movie.
Can I start my own distribution company?
No. It is illegal to legally run a distribution business without being a distributor.
You must follow certain rules, even though you are not distributing films of other people.
You can't, for example, charge different prices to different theaters. Also, you cannot charge different fees to different customers.
You also can't sell your services to other companies.

How To
How to get a Hollywood Walk of Fame star
The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce established the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960. The HWOF's Los Angeles location is at 6233 Hollywood Boulevard. It is made up of 2,711 stars that are embedded in the Hollywood Boulevard sidewalk. Each star represents an individual who contributed to popular culture, such as television, radio or theater. There are currently 1,922 living persons listed on the HWOF.
You must first submit your name and address to the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to become a member of HWOF. The Hollywood Department of Cultural Affairs then submits your information to the City of Los Angeles Department of Cultural Affairs. Once you are approved, you will receive a certificate of eligibility that includes your name, date, residence, occupation, category, and other information. You will also receive a bronze plaque engraved with your name. This plaque is affixed to a concrete base in front of the designated star.
If you were nominated by an HWOF member, or if there are significant contributions made to the entertainment, film, radio, theatre, and music industries, you may be eligible for a "star" award. The nominations are evaluated by a committee, which then decides whether or not to approve them. If they do approve them, they send a note to the home address of the applicant stating their decision. If the person accepts, they will be sent a second letter to confirm their acceptance. The applicant then pays $25 to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which forwards the money to the City of Los Angles Department of Cultural Affairs.
The department issues a check payable to the Hollywood Chamber of commerce, which sends the check to the Hollywood Walk of Fame Foundation.
